This month the Mendon Foundation voted unanimously to officially name one of its land trust properties. The Mendon Foundation had received 26-acres of beautiful wooded land from Dr. Evelyn Lewis back in December 2001. This property remained unnamed over the last 24-years and was often referred to as the Mendon Foundation’s “Pittsford-Mendon Center Road property,” “Lewis property,” or “Honeoye Haven.” This month the Mendon Foundation officially named the property the “Lewis Nature Preserve” in tribute to Dr. Evelyn Lewis.
As with all the existing Mendon Foundation land trust properties, the Lewis Nature Preserve is open to the public, and is being preserved as a forever-wild green space in our community. The Lewis Nature Preserve is a mix of soft and hardwoods along with evergreens, has established walking and equestrian riding trails and a nice meadow in the center. The parcel is located behind 1136 Pittsford Mendon Center Rd., across the street from Mendon Ponds Park. Street side parking is available across the street, and an easement trail is utilized to access the Mendon Foundation property. We hope to add signage reflecting the official name in the near future.
