History of the property
Joe Spezio, owner of Elam Sand and Gravel, is no stranger to the Mendon Foundation. Joe worked with the Mendon Foundation and Monroe County over the last two decades to establish the Lehigh Valley Trail. In December 2005, Joe generously donated 25-acres of land to the Mendon Foundation, a portion of which extended the west end of the Lehigh Valley Trail into the town of Caledonia in Livingston County.
Joe Spezio’s generosity and desire to preserve green spaces in our communities has continued. As of December 31, 2007, Joe made a second land donation to the Mendon Foundation including 24-acres of mature forest on the east side of Mendon-Ionia Road (Rt. 64) in the town of Mendon. This property is at the extreme southeast corner of Monroe County and borders the Ontario County line. The new Mendon Foundation property is not immediately adjacent to Mendon-Ionia Road, however included with the land donation is a legal easement allowing access to the property.
The Mendon Foundation is very excited to add the Mendon-Ionia Road property to its portfolio of land trust properties. With this recent addition, the Mendon Foundation now holds approximately 160-acres of green space in the surrounding communities that plans to preserve for wildlife and light recreation use such as hiking, bird watching, equestrian, x-country skiing, etc.
