Sunday August 25th marked the 13th anniversary of the Mendon Foundation’s Black Diamond races. Over 150 runners gathered in Mendon on the Lehigh Valley Trail to participate in this year’s events. As in past year’s two races were run simultaneously including a half marathon and a 5K run. Volunteers throughout the community gathered in the early hours of the morning to assure the course was set up and ready for the event. Water stations and road crossings were manned, mile markers were placed, and EMTs were on hand to assure any medical needs could be met should they arise. Friends and family stood along the course to cheer on the runners. Many spectators gathered at the start / finish line where music played, and a food station was available along with tables with Black Diamond Race and Mendon Foundation swag available for sale.

Mendon Foundation President, Fran Celona kicked off the morning’s events with a number of announcements. He was joined by Brent Rosiek, Mendon Town Councilperson, who also made some brief remarks and wished the runners well. A couple of Honeoye Falls Lima High School singers gave a beautiful rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner. The Rochester Running Company did a wonderful job facilitating the race, and we thank them for all of their efforts. All race participants received a beautiful medal hand crafted by local artist Geoff Gretton.
